Wow, this is a great digital camera!

Based on earlier experience from buying the Canon Photoshot S20 several years ago I did an immediate investigation to find out if the camera had any hot pixels on the CCD. I experienced hot pixel faults in the S20 and got the camera replaced by the store. It is not a catastrophe to have one or two dead or hot pixels on a 5 Mega Pixel CCD but it will annoy you every time you see them when looking at pictures on the PC screen! Therefore my concern when I now bought the new C-5060.

Did I find any hot pixels then? Yes I did! I found one, in the upper right part of the pictures I took as test samples.

How did I figure out that it actually was an hot pixel? The method I use is what I call 'the light and darkness test'. Take a few pictures on dark areas, filling out the full picture, without flash and not over exposed. Do the same but with a very light area as the motive, now it's ok to use the flash if needed.

Now to the evaluation of the pictures: Look all over the pictures in full size (100%) on the PC screen; if there are hot pixels you should have no problems identify them this way. If you find light pixels on the same spot on all dark pictures you can be shure of having hot pixels on the CCD and the opposite, if you find dark pixels the same way on the light pictures, then you have dead pixels on the CCD.

My first thought was to get the camera replaced. However reading through the user's guide I found the great function called pixel mapping. This function helps you get rid of faulty pixels; and it really worked! The hot pixel dissapaered!

Now I need to get used to all the possibilities this camera offers - I expect great fun the time to come.

Olympus C-5060 – probably my next

The latest 2-3 years I have taken 3 000+ pictures with my Canon Photoshot S20 digital camera. Earlier, I had an OM-2 SLR for quite some 20 years, taking both colour slides and b&w. I have to admit I have not taken the amount of pictures with my OM-2 over all those years that I have done with the S20. Digital photography is really exciting, not to say thrilling, a new dimension of amateur photo work!

I still think the Canon S20 is a great camera, good picture quality and a handy format, the same time with a full metal body. Now, however, I like to evolve toward something a little bit more exciting. The latest months I have studied d-cam reviews in papers and on the Net. I have especially focused on tracking information regarding cameras in the range of 5 mega-pixels as Canon G5, Nikon Coolpix 5400, Olympus C-5050 and C-5060. Lately I have narrowed the scope to C-5050 and C-5060!

Canon G5 was for long my preferred choice. I found that the picture quality seemed to be great, very good battery capacity etc, while the CA has been reported to be disturbing as well as the fact that the optics blocks part of the sight in the view-finder.

I had the opportunity to test the G5 side by side with a C-5060 in a camera store the other day, and among other things I found that the G5 was much slower in focusing on an object than the C-5060.

The C-5050 is a great looking camera. Probably the best aperture in class, 1.8, uses standard AA batteries supports quite different sets of memory cards and feels good in your palm. However the camera is not that fast in operation speed and even worse, sample pictures shows extreme colour cast (green and red/magenta) on sharp contrast edges; this makes it out of scope for me.

The C-5060 presents a very good wide angle, 27 mm (equal to 35-camera), best in class together with a 4x zoom. It is possible to fit filters directly on the objective without the need to purchase an extra adapter. It is fast. It is nice to hold and use and it is presenting very good picture quality!

The Olympus C-5060 is the digital camera that I really will consider buying as my next digital photo tool!

C-5060 reviews can be found at these places:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/c5060.html
http://www.megapixel.net/cgi-bin/fs_loader.pl?p=http%3A//www.megapixel.net/reviews/oly-c5060/c5060-review.html
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/C5060/C56A.HTM
http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/c5050/c5060-rev.html
http://www.molon.de/5060.html#Reviews

The Megapixel Chase - get to know the digital picture resolution basics

Is it ok to stick around with the 'old' 2 or 3 Megapixel digital camera or is a newer 5 M a must? Intuitively will a camera with a higher resolution give better picture results. But before making up your mind rushing away buying the new fancy 'more megapixel' camera, read the excelent description of the basics for digital picture resolution that is presented at http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/und_resolution.shtml.
